Hawks’ Gueye faces long road back after foot surgery

ATLANTA — Tough break for the Hawks and Mouhamed Gueye. The young forward went under the knife Tuesday for a fractured left foot he suffered during a workout back on July 8, and now he’s staring down the possibility of missing the start of the 2026-27 season. That’s a gut punch for a guy who was starting to carve out a consistent role in Atlanta’s rotation.

Gueye, who averaged 4.4 points and 3.6 rebounds last season, had quietly become a reliable piece for the Hawks. He played in 77 games, making eight starts, after a breakout 2024-25 campaign where he started 28 times and put up 6.0 points and 4.2 boards. Now this.

The Hawks say they’ll check back in on Gueye in three to four months. That timeline puts us right around the start of next season, meaning Atlanta might have to tip off without him. Not ideal for a team looking to build momentum. Gueye’s got the talent, but injuries are cruel. Here’s hoping he gets back on the court sooner rather than later.
