Germany and Bayern Munich icon Manuel Neuer has announced his retirement from international football for the second time, insisting he has “no regrets” despite a devastating World Cup exit.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper, who first stepped away after Euro 2024, made a “conscious decision” to return for the 2026 World Cup. However, his final bow ended in heartbreak as Paraguay knocked out Germany in a penalty shootout in the round of 32.
“It has always been an honour!” Neuer wrote on Instagram. “The early exit from the World Cup is extremely disappointing. We clearly fell short of expectations and should have progressed further. This ending is very painful.”
Despite the bitter finale, Neuer expressed immense gratitude. “I made a conscious decision to play for Germany one more time. At 40, with four World Cups of experience, I wanted to support the young players and help German football. I don’t regret this decision for a second.”
